Winter is upon us, and with it unfortunately so are many stuffy noses and potential colds. If you are looking to strengthen your immune system through the foods you consume while also gleaning benefits for your skin, you have come to the right place. Our skin is affected in winter by harsh weather and low temperatures, so intentionally consuming foods that will build immunity while soothing the skin is a great idea to pursue this season.
You are probably aware of the many benefits of vitamin C for the skin and immune system, but a reminder of its wonderful affects can inspire implementation in a variety of ways. Consuming vitamin C through citrus fruits is a classic choice, as it is easy to grab an orange or tangerine to snack on throughout the day. You can also add grapefruit to your breakfast menu to start your day off strong with vitamin C. Making an effort to include any of these sources in your routine may also cleanse your skin and promote wound healing from the inside out. Pairing plain Greek yogurt with your breakfast grapefruit can add to taste while building immunity against colds. Consuming yogurt with live, active cultures can strengthen the immune system and benefit your skin. If plain Greek yogurt isn’t your thing, try sweetening it with honey for a sweeter, natural taste. The lactic acid in yogurt works to remove dead skin cells, shrink pores and therefore soften skin. Try adding yogurt to your menu to help fight dry skin from the inside out. The zinc in yogurt is anti-inflammatory, reducing inflammation in the skin and body while building immunity.
Finally, take a look at the many recipes spinach can be used in to craft a delicious dinner or snack. Not only is spinach a versatile ingredient, but the antioxidants present in these leafy greens help to fight against infection and strengthen immunity. Spinach is also rich in iron, which affects your skin directly. If you have an iron deficiency, your body may have a difficult time transporting oxygen, leaving skin dull and pale. Eating spinach reintroduces iron into the system, promoting oxygen flow and a healthy glow and color.
There are many other foods you can consume to strengthen both the immune system and skin, including red bell peppers and green tea. Adding some of these foods to your winter menu will promote a healthy body inside and out as you and your loved ones face this cold, harsh season.
