How to Wear Makeup Without Damaging Your Skin

Many of us enjoy the way makeup enhances our natural beauty. Whether it be through a brush of mascara, a hint of foundation or a lovely lip color, we can easily brighten our appearance through makeup application. However, wearing makeup daily without taking steps to protect your skin can lead to many issues. Makeup causes breakouts, dry or oily skin and clogged pores. Certain products may irritate skin, resulting in itchiness and redness. So how can you continue to wear makeup without harming skin?

First, be sure you know what’s in your makeup. If applying foundation, try searching for a product that implements vitamin C. This way, rather than tearing at your skin’s natural barrier, your makeup may help strengthen and protect your skin. If you are using products with lengthy lists of ingredients that are difficult to pronounce, you may want to do some research on whether they are helpful or harmful to your skin.

Of course, it can be hard to find makeup that will leave your skin entirely unscathed, due to its tendency to clog pores. This brings us to our second tip- cleansing! It is incredibly important to cleanse skin before applying makeup. Cleansing sets the stage for the makeup you plan on applying that day. The process helps remove dirt and other particles that could become trapped beneath layers of makeup and clog your pores. Likewise, be sure to cleanse after removing makeup as well. This helps remove excess makeup that could also cause clogging or irritation if left on skin. Be careful about how you cleanse- you will want to find a natural cleanser like this essential face cleanser that gently removes buildup from your skin. Using makeup wipes can be harsh and irritating, while smearing makeup rather than ultimately removing it. Scrubbing your makeup off too aggressively can hurt your skin as well, especially in the eye area where skin is thin and sensitive. This is why it is important to find a natural cleanser and a soft washcloth before causing your skin further distress.

Other quick tips include washing your makeup brushes at least once a month, allowing your skin a break every so often, and never going to bed without first removing makeup. Keeping your skin and tools clean is sanitary and helpful for any skin type. Be sure to pay attention to how a product affects your skin- removing any makeup from your routine that seems to have a negative impact.

It is important to intentionally care for your skin while utilizing makeup to enhance your natural beauty. Makeup can add that extra boost or glow you may be searching for, but not without being mindful of its application and all that your skin might need in the process.
