January 8 is National Winter Skin Relief Day. For good reason, too. The winter elements can be pretty harsh on our skin. With dry, cold air outside and dry, hot air inside, our skin just can't catch a break. And, according to Joshua Zeichner MD, Director of Cosmetic & Clinical Research in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, "Cold, dry weather dehydrates skin, which reduces its ability to reflect light." (Better Homes & Gardens, Dec, 2017). So not only does winter wreak havoc with the condition of our skin, it also affects the appearance.
Thankfully, there are some easy steps that can be taken to combat the havoc winter can have on our skin:
- Leia, the editor of Essential Oil Diffuser Judge, says that using an essential oil diffuser with the right kind of essential oils, such as lavender or frankincense, helps hydrate skin. The best diffuser I have found is from Viva Naturals.
- Drinking lots of water is not only good for your body on the inside by keeping our organs operating smoothly, it hydrates our skin, which is the largest organ of all.
- Jamie Ludwig of Everyday Health reports that using natural fats on our skin is an essential part of any beauty routine. Coconut oil, shea butter, and almond oil are just some of the natural fats that have moisturizing, protective, and even antibacterial qualities.
"Over the past year I have been using the moisturizer and skin elixir and I am loving my skin! I believe it has helped my skin tone, my face is so soft and smooth and it has helped diminish some of my fine lines."
Taking care of your skin isn't hard, but it's definitely important. What are other ways you have found to be helpful for winter skin relief? Let me know in the comments section below.
