When searching for the ideal skincare product, it is important to examine not just the intended result, but also the product’s ingredients. While there are many products that utilize natural ingredients, finding those with harmful ingredients is often more common. Unfortunately, this goes unnoticed by the buyer when they are unaware that these seemingly harmless ingredients have negative effects. Listed below are some of the most frequently seen ingredients in skincare that cause harm and should be avoided.

Avoid Synthetic Fragrances
First, avoid synthetic fragrances. These fragrances may smell enticing, but they are known to irritate users with sensitivities or allergies. Search for products that use natural fragrance instead. Natural fragrance usually works just as well as synthetic, and oftentimes the scent is more pleasant and light than a synthetic option.

What are parabens and why are they bad for you?
Next, avoid products with parabens. How do you know if parabens are present in a product? Usually these ingredients will include the suffix “paraben.” Common examples include “propylparaben,” “methylparaben,” and “butylparaben.” With such long names, it is easy to ignore these harmful ingredients. Parabens can be found in skincare as well as shampoo and conditioner and are meant to prevent bacteria and allow the product to last longer. However, parabens can disrupt hormones and irritate skin. Natural alternatives that help with preservation and fight bacteria include grapefruit seed extract and rosemary. While looking for skincare products, steer clear of parabens and seek natural alternatives.

Is retinol good or bad?
Another common ingredient to avoid is retinol. Retinol is a substitute Vitamin A, but it cannot provide the benefits of this essential vitamin without harm. This ingredient is meant to reduce aging, but has been known to cause weakened, dry skin and other irritations. Rather than settle for a substitute, look for products using Vitamin A itself in order to reduce signs of aging.

Avoid Aluminum
Lastly, there are many products available that utilize aluminum, especially deodorants. Aluminum is meant to be antiperspirant, but instead causes itchiness and irritation. Those with sensitivities may find themselves experiencing more intense reactions to aluminum. Fortunately, natural deodorants are available, like farragio’s Underarm Deodorant Spray. Deodorants like these bring natural ingredients together to fight body odor without harmful products like aluminum.

It can be easy to ignore long lists of ingredients or words that seem difficult to read, but when it comes to skincare it is important to be aware of the ingredients we are introducing to our body’s largest organ. Keep these ingredients in mind the next time you shop, and avoid products that resort to using these harmful substances.
