Posted by Angela @ farragio on Thursday, December 27, 2018, In : health beauty

image of woman smiling

Your skin is made up of three layers: the subcutis, the dermis, and the epidermis. The epidermis is the outermost layer - the skin that we see - which consists mainly of cells called keratinocytes that form several layers that constantly grow outwards as the exterior cells die and flake off. (National Geographic)

Exfoliating your skin is what helps aid the sloughing off of those dead skin cells, and is one of the most important steps in your skin care routine. Exfoliating your skin has...

If you are getting less than 6 hours of sleep a night on a regular basis, it is most probably affecting your skin. First, let’s look at a few things that happen when you DON’T get enough sleep.

Homemade face masks, but we aren’t talking Halloween. We are talking beauty.

It is so relaxing to treat yourself to a spa treatment. Unfortunately, a day at the spa can be somewhat costly. Fortunately, there is nothing wrong with having your spa day at home, in your bathroom, relaxing in your jammies and robe. A long, hot bath…soft music…some candles…hair in a towel…and a homemade face mask. Ahhh, feeling relaxed already, huh?

There are some great recipes out in cyber-world...

Beauty Benefits Of Castor Oil

oil & spa setting

Someone was asking me recently what the benefits of castor oil are. There are health benefits to castor oil, but here are some surprising beauty benefits as well.

     1) Castor oil contains ricinoleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid, which acts as a humectant and helps moisturize skin. It not only helps moisturize, it helps lock in moisture.

     2) Castor oil has antimicrobial properties that can help reduce the symptoms of acne.

     3) Castor oil helps fight and fade blemish...

girl with long hair

     1) Drink water! Keeping your body hydrated also keeps your hair hydrated.

     2) Shampooing only once a week is ideal, but not everyone can do that, so try to avoid shampooing your hair every day.

     3) Use a clarifying shampoo once a month. It helps remove buildup from your regular shampoo. If you don't have clarifying shampoo, in a pinch you can use 1 part dishwashing liquid to 4 parts water.

     4) Biotin is a supplement from the Vitamin B family that has been known to ...

Your hands take a lot of wear and tear. The next time you're exfoliating don't forget to exfoliate your hands, too. Gently wash your hands for ten seconds with your favorite scrub, rinse with lukewarm water, and follow up with moisturizer, just as you would your face. Your hands will thank you for it.

National Hydration Day

Posted by Angela @ farragio on Saturday, June 23, 2018, In : health beauty

In honor of June 23 being National Hydration Day, this is a repost about the benefits of water.

glass of water

There is debate on how much water one needs to drink each day. Traditionally, it's been recommended that a person should drink eight 8-oz glasses (64 oz) of water each day. Our bodies are 60% water so it stands to reason that we need to keep our bodies hydrated. But recently it's been argued that since the body derives water from other sources, such as fruits and vegetables, it's not necessa...

Today is a guest post by Bobby Propes, awesome beard aficionado

Bobby Propes

Anyone with a beard knows two things:

1) Beards are awesome

2) They can be hard to maintain

This is evidenced by dry skin, wiry, coarse beard hair, beard itch and even breakouts on the skin under your beard. All of these things can be easily avoided with some simple maintenance using a beard paste. Applying a beard paste to your beard regularly can help with these problems in many ways.

A beard paste will re-hydrat...

Sweet As Honey

honey being poured

When baking, cut down on your processed sugar intake by using honey instead. It's sweeter than sugar so not as much is needed, and it has great health benefits such as being a natural antibiotic and antioxidant.

For every cup of sugar a recipe calls for substitute with 3/4 cup of honey. Since honey contains liquid be sure to reduce other liquids by a 1/4 to 1/2 cup for every 1 cup of honey you use. Also reduce oven temperature by 25 degrees.

Unusual Remedy For Restless Leg Syndrome

bars of soap

There is an unusual remedy for nighttime Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) and leg cramps that is gaining in popularity as a cheap, risk-free alternative to costly (and sometimes dangerous) medicines. Ready for it? It’s simply putting a bar of soap under your bed sheet.

I know, it sounds crazy, right? As someone who has suffered with RLS for years all I can say is “don’t knock it until you’ve tried it”. There is no medical explanation for why it works but I can attest to the fact t...

Who needs expensive facial scrubs when you can make your own homemade facial scrub right from your kitchen pantry?

Just mix a little bit of olive oil and sugar into the palm of your hand, gently massage into your face, and then rinse with warm water.

Your skin will feel soft and smooth and since olive oil is a natural oil it won’t clog your pores. During the dry winter months I finish by using a little more olive oil as a moisturizer for my face before going to bed.
